Daily Collegian - Groups show off moves at talent show (2nd Place)

YouTube took over Eisenhower Auditorium Tuesday evening without the use of a computer as members of Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon special organization, Atlas, brought most-viewed videos to life.

From The Lonely Island’s “I’m On A Boat” to Rebecca Black’s coveted anthem “Friday,” organization members bounced and bobbed their way to first place at the Homecoming For The Glory Talent Show, beating out Lion Ambassadors for the first time in four years. Until last year, the event was called Airbands and was a part of a lip-synching musical tradition.

The Society of Women Engineers and Theta Chi took second place with a Super Mario Brothers theme; Orchesis and Beta Theta Pi took third with “The Lion King” theme; fourth place went to Lion Ambassadors, who told the legend of Mount Nittany; and fifth place went to Phi Sigma Rho and Sigma Nu, who took audience members across America with a final rendition of “God Bless America” to close off their dance.

But it wasn’t just the greeks and special organizations who showed off their stuff Tuesday night.

The 2011 Homecoming Court opened the evening with a mash-up of popular songs, proving along with being involved in the Penn State community, these students still stay up to date on the latest dance moves.

Each pair made its way to the front of the stage, showing off its skills but none quite like Will Sheehan (senior-civil engineering) and Shadé Olasimbo (senior-broadcast journalism).

The two completed synchronized cartwheels into splits, with huge smiles breaking across Sheehan’s and Olasimbo’s faces as the crowd went wild. Several groans from the male audience members could be heard across the auditorium, but Sheehan recovered without any limping.

The event showed many students what the Homecoming spirit is all about — at least, that’s why Alexandra Zepp came out.

“I just wanted to see what it’s all about,” Zepp (freshman-actuarial science) said, adding that she wasn’t familiar with any of the couples or organizations, but was eager to find out.

Some students, however, weren’t completely sold on the new theme choices, which included movie classics like “The Little Mermaid” and “Peter Pan,” as well as new favorites like “Tangled” and “The Dukes of job.”

Organizations were awarded spirit points for winning and placing, and they also received points for the number of members that attended.
