2015 Theta Chi Open is Two Weeks Away - May 1st

2014 Theta Chi Golf Open

The 34th annual Theta Chi Open is just two weeks away, Friday May 1st. The Running of the Roses is in its 141st year. We might be an ugly crowd if we make it that far.

23 Theta Chi's are attending and 19 are playing golf. 8 of the 23 attendees are former Theta Chi champions and represent all former Theta Chi Open Champions (only one missing is Satch Diamond Stratis who has hung up his spikes). The former attending Champions are Brothers Mausser, Mooney, Schlegel, Dalesio, Kivitz, Howe, Bernardo and Perkins.

The top four golfers from the prior year somewhat traditionally play in the same group the following year. Should that tradition continue here is a list of the top scores posted last year:

  • Dalesio 92
  • Raymond 97
  • Bernardo 97
  • Bochey 99
  • Mankus 100
  • Schlegel 100

Phil Bochey will not be attending this year so the final man in the group would be either Matt Mankus or Greg Schlegel to be decided by a coin flip or a chugging contest...their call.

Brother Losinger (Pig) has been knocking on the door in recent years and may be the best to have never won. However, Vegas odds are trending Brother Matt Mankus who has been playing well in recent years.

Here is the itinerary:

Thursday, April 30th (yes Thursday as many are arriving early to prepare):
10 am - Bloody Mary's at Freds
1 pm - Chip and putt contest organized by Brother Cunningham.
4 pm - Car Bombs at Freds.
Note: no winner of the Chip and Putt contest has ever won the Theta Chi Open.

Friday
9 am - Bloody Mary's at Fred's. Warm up for the Open.
11 am - First tee time at Shoregate Country Club located at 35 School House Lane in Ocean View, NJ.

If arriving Friday here are the directions from Atlantic City:
Take the Garden State Parkway southbound to exit 17/Sea Isle City. Turn left onto Sea Isle City Boulevard, heading west toward Ocean View. Go through the light at Route 9 onto School House Lane. Proceed to the entrance to Shore Gate Golf Club, ahead and on your left.

Get there early and hit some balls or warm up on the back porch with a couple of Bloody Mary's.  Please make sure you pay the Greens Fee ($79) in the club house (every year someone forgets to pay). Also Brothers Matthews and Wszalek will be collecting $5 a head on the first tee for closest to the pin and longest drive contests.

6 pm - 19th hole banquet at 160 103rd street, Stone Harbor, NJ. Payment for banquet should be made as you arrive at the house to either Brother McClure or Rooney. Thanks to Brother McClure for handling banquet arrangements and Brother Cunningham for bravely booking the house without regard to damage deposits.

Cost for banquet are still TBD but should be significantly less than last year. Bring $50 bucks just in case (Hugh's last estimate was $40 to cover the barbecue banquet and a keg). This is the same house Stretch booked last year as he courteously made sure it had an elevator for the old guys.
