K.I.C.K.S. Defined

The Brothers of Omega held the first annual Theta Chi K.I.C.K.S. (Kids in Cooperation with Karing Students) Soccer Classic in the autumn 1989. The event, sponsored by Budweiser and other local businesses, included a raffle and the participation of 25 Greek and independent teams. The double elimination took place on Pollack fiends and raised $2,200 in support of the Strombreak Youth Runaway Shelter in State College,

IN 2990, with the event gaining notoriety on campus, Theta Chi raised $6,400 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a Pittsburgh based organization aiding children with life-threatening diseases. With a 32-team, single elimination bracket, the tournament was a booming success. For 1991, a women’s division is scheduled and a goal of $10,000 has been set - a goal that, when reached, will place K.I.C.K.S. in the top five philanthropies at Penn State!

President’s Report

By Hugh Cadzow ’83 - Alumni Corporation President

Greetings to all my brothers out there, especially to those involved to some capacity with the operations in the Middle East. This is a brief note on a variety of "stuff" happening at Omega and with the Alumni Corporation:

Winter Corporation - It was held on February 2 and was very successful as 21 alumni and undergraduates participated. We mostly discussed the subjects I review below as well as new ideas for alumni mailings, the Omegaphone, a Founders' Day picnic, and improving communications. It is with pleasure that I extend a special "thank you" to Br. Frank Crissy '49 who, in being at this meeting, has been to four straight alumni functions and has given us some insightful input.

Physical Plant - All the code work has been completed and not all to our satisfaction, but at least it is done. A big "thanks" goes out to Bros. Howard Alter and William Renton for their contributions toward a new ceramic tile floor in the kitchen. Another big "thanks" goes to Br. Dave Mattiace for selecting the tile and getting the contractor to install it.

"Metro" Dinners - At our winter corporation meeting I placed some people in charge of organizing events in areas where a majority of alumni reside. The first will be attempted in the Philadelphia area. You should be getting notification of a place and time for the dinner within the next few weeks. This is a way of bringing Omega to you since many of you can't make it back to Penn State.

Alumni News - My last request for more information from everyone to increase the alumni news did not go unanswered. We received many interesting items which we've included in this Omegaphone, but we still want more! We also need more information on "Giff" for our special issue. Just keep those cards and letters coming!

PSU Honors OX Alumnus

Robert E. Eberly '39 and his family were honored last May for their $10 million donation to the Campaign for Penn State, one of the two largest gifts the fund received. The University formally named the Eberly College of Science at Spring commencement ceremonies, the first time that Penn State has named an academic college to honor a benefactor.

Eberly, who was also treasurer for the Campaign for Penn State, told graduates, "Our family's gift reflects the pride I feel as an alumnus of this college and our commitment to excellence in higher education. It is our hope that you graduates will use your Penn State education to make our world a better place. At the same time, we also hope that you will long remember Penn State with pride and with your own commitment."

Alumni News

Frederick Vansant '20, one of Omega's founding members, writes, "Congratulations for honoring Winfield (PETE) Smith as BROTHER NUMBER ONE. A finer man never graduated from Penn State. He looks like a million dollars. If you would like to run a beauty contest for old men I'd give him competition -- at least I'd come in second. That is if only the two of us competed!"

"There is nothing new about me but my age and I am happy if that happens every morning. I play duplicate bridge on Wednesdays with my friends in the Summit Old Guard -- a social group of retired business and professional men. My son and Omega member Retired Colonel Keith Vansant has been very active with organizing and operating the Penn State Club of Georgia. The Alumni Office awarded the club high honors and recognition."

Ernest Wilby '34, editor of the Omegaphone for 1933-'34, is remaining active in his retirement in Florida with golfing, traveling, church work, and the Kiwanis Club.

George Chapman '49, retired from Colgate-Palmolive, keeps busy with sailing, skiing, volunteer work, and grandchildren. His advice: "Hang in there, Omega!"

James Taylor '49 is retired from Wells Manufacturing in Arlington Heights, Illinois. He enjoys woodworking and traveling to both the east and west coasts.

Edward Noyes '51, now in Nokomis, Florida, recently returned from a European trip, where he met the family of his Austrian son-in-law at Innsbruck.

Toby Froehlich '72 started a new company in addition to his real estate firm -- building full service retirement communities.

Jeffrey Sleigh '76, who visited Omega at Homecoming and won the man-miles award, lives in Nuevo, California, working for Chevron U.S.A. and raising quarter horses.

Paul Baker '80 writes: "I've made my final payment on my 1986 sex-change operation, and am currently getting in shape for what my doctors predict should be a stellar women's tennis career."

Gary Hicks '82 and his wife, Kathi, announce the birth of their son, Jeremy.

Daniel Wood '84 reports that not much new ever happens in Montrose, Pennsylvania, but he "finally" got married. His wife is the former Diane Lewis.

Bernie Kachinko '86 is head girls' volleyball coach at Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The girls started the 1990 campaign with a 5-0 record, including a tournament championship.

Looking Back....

Parties * Pinnings (From the Fall 1951 Omegaphone)

Tho active men at Omega Chapter have already started planning their social calendar for the fall semester. With lots of hard work-started early-Theta Chi should approach the heights of Campus social life. This week we started off the organized parties with a hay-ride. October holds a lot of busy weekends with a Shipwreck Party, Alumni Weekend, and a Father's Day Stag affair. Of course first house party will have our traditional "Bowery Brawl.” The parties will be highlighted by gala productions of the Theta Chi Players. We are expecting a lot of help from our pledge class this year. I understand they can play any instrument from the "uke" to a vibraphone.

Cupid was busy this summer and from the indications I would say Ted Sappie was hit the hardest. Ted took Barbara Fisher (AGD) as his wife just a few weeks ago. They are living in an apartment in Lemont at the present time. Craig Rupp, our veep, will be pinned the first time he can get to Pittsburgh; Miss Jo Jarvis will be the recipient. Tom Lewis and Ed Keller made the big move by pinning Mae Ralph and Anne Hutchinson respectively. The new president of the Theta Chi Players, yours truly, quit joking around and pinned Miss Janet Clark of Hartford, Conn.

Last year, as some of you know, Theta Chi took second place at the Spring Carnival with our "Dunk a Theta Chi or a Delt” stand. The Tri Delts combined with us and provided several girls clad in bathing suits - a great added attraction. This year we will combine again and are looking for that first place prize, $100.

The Nittany Lion has come to roost at ye olde chapter. Al Gregal has been given the nod to don the lion's garb at the football games this year. Why not Come and see him perform at the Michigan State game. That's Alumni Weekend and should be the best game of the year. Jim Nelson
